Why word count matters

Essays, articles, meta descriptions, social posts and academic submissions all come with length limits. A live counter lets you write to the target instead of pasting into a checker afterwards.

Character counts (with and without spaces) matter for SEO title and description tags, SMS, and platforms like X. Reading time is a useful signal for blog posts — most readers decide whether to commit based on it.

What counts as a word

The counter trims your text and splits on any run of whitespace, so "well-known" is one word, "New York" is two, and a URL is one. This matches how word processors and most submission systems count. Line breaks and multiple spaces do not add to the word total.

Word count divided by 225 words per minute, a common average for adult silent reading, rounded up to the nearest minute.
How are words counted?
By splitting on runs of whitespace after trimming the text. This matches how most word processors count.
How are sentences counted?
By counting groups of sentence-ending punctuation (. ! ?). Abbreviations and decimals can throw this off slightly, so treat it as an estimate.
Does it work offline?

How many words is a typical piece of writing?
A tweet/X post is up to ~50 words; an SEO meta description ~25 words (155 characters); a blog post 600–2,000 words; a college essay 1,500–5,000; a novel 70,000–100,000. A page of double-spaced 12pt text is roughly 250 words.
How long does it take to read?
This tool uses 225 words per minute, a common adult silent-reading average. Speaking aloud is slower — about 130–150 wpm — so for a speech, expect roughly 1.5 minutes per 200 words.
Do you count characters with or without spaces?
Both are shown. 'Characters' includes spaces and line breaks (what Twitter/X and most form limits count); 'no spaces' excludes all whitespace (sometimes used for translation and typesetting quotes).
Why is the sentence count slightly off?
Sentences are counted from runs of . ! ? followed by a space or end of text. Abbreviations (e.g., Dr., U.S.) and decimals can add or merge a sentence. Treat it as a close estimate, not an exact grammar analysis.
